Live a little, get off the Ring Road and go visit the West Fjords!

The adventure through the West Fjords is a jaw dropping and ear popping driving experience in the northwestern part of the country (in red on map above – courtesy of Wikipedia). Facing Greenland, the peninsula is connected to the rest of Iceland by a 7-km-wide isthmus to the mainland.

Because the roads are narrow, winding and often snow and ice packed, travel by land is often difficult. Not unlike Alaska, travel by boat or plane is often not only the preferred method of transportation but the only feasible way to get around in the winter months.

However, during the summer months, you can handle the roads on your own because you will be prepared and rent a 4×4 at Payless Car Rental. That way you can get off the Ring Road and visit the real Iceland. In fact, any off-roading adventure should include the West Fjords.  Be sure and get the extra insurance coverage for sand and lava damage.  It’s worth the extra cost because this damage is likely to occur and without you even knowing it.  Weather and Iceland….well….. it is unpredictable, uncontrollable and definitely going to greet you with a mighty roar at least a handful of times while you are there, even in the summer months.  Up in the West Fjords, they call it the Arctic Wind.

Having said that, you will be richly rewarded for your bravery as “magical” doesn’t even begin to cover what you are going to see.

You can cross over into the West Fjords by The Ferry Baldur from Stykkishólmur on the Snæfellsnes peninsula to Brjánslækur in the West Fjords. Car travels with you so no worries about that.

The West Fjords are a vast and untamed land where people are sparse and beauty abounds – a place God himself would go to meditate. There is very little else I could say to describe it any better….just go see and feel it for yourself.
